Bholanath College was established on 16th August 1946, in the bank of river Brahmaputra in Dhubri District of Assam. The department of philosophy of B.N.College came into existence in the same year (1946) along with some other departments. Since its inception the department is engaged in imparting education to students.  The joint effort of R.K.Bose, founder secretary of B.N.College, Dhubri, Zahirul Huq, D.M.; founder president of B.N.College, Dhubri, Dr. P.B. Roy, founder principal of B.N.College, and immense support of people with their noble purpose and great effort made possible to start the various departments successfully.

Initially, Dr. P.B.Roy, founder Principal of B.N.College headed the department in 1946. In 1947 Munindra Nath Ghosh took the charge of the department till 1948. After that Birendranath Bhattacharya took the charge of the department. In the year 1951 Shanti Shekhar Bagchi joint in the department and gave a systematic shape to the department. 

At present there are three full time faculty members in the department - Rita Borah (HOD), Mrs. Nabanita Devi, Namita Pawegam and one post lying vacant.

The objective of the Department of Philosophy is to provide excellent integrated education to students. The department encourages student to approach education as a lifelong learning process so that they are capable of participating in and understanding the world of the 21st century. The department always tries to provide a suitable environment for implication of knowledge and culture and it challenges students to promote their own intellectual, social, and personal development. The department serves this objective by guiding students to acquire knowledge. 

The department emphasizes the necessity of critical thinking skill and to recognize the importance of reflecting them in ideas and values. The department foster situations in which students have opportunities to apply their skills both historically orientated and case based learning techniques. 

The department of philosophy is committed to strengthening its commitment to students’ success and broadening its recognition for excellence in teaching and community service. 

The department continues to enhance students learning by improving upon and adding to additional departmental facilities like book donations to advance learner having financial problems. The department also provides financial support to the students whenever necessary.

The Department always encourages the students to involve in extracurricular activities and for that purpose the department provides facilities to the students.

 

Vision of the department:

Students completing a B.A. in Philosophy will be able to:

  • Communicate a clear understanding of historical and contemporary philosophical enquiry.
  • Demonstrate and ability to think independently about a philosophical topic or problems.
  • Clearly articulate and support their own views.
  • Critically analyze a philosophical argument concerning a particular topic or problem.
