The Department of English was established on August 16, 1946, the very date of the establishment of the college. Since, its  inception, the department has been engaged in imparting quality education. The Honours course in English was introduced in 1959 to meet the pressing demand of the students. The overall response and success of the students, offering both Honours, Regular courses and Higher Secondary are encouraging. The Department has become prominent in the Western part of Assam. The Department has the autonomy to chalk out teaching plans as per the syllabus prescribed by Gauhati University and also to select candidates for admission into UG Honours Course.

         The syllabus of Honours Course offers a wide variety of optional papers enabling the learners come to know the interrelation of life with literature. The Indian, American, African Literature, etc give a broader out look to the students to understand various types of literature and culture. The classical literature encourages students to think laterally about literature of the world and the possibility of cultural exchange. The Modern English Literature incorporated in the syllabus contains the latest developments in the field of literature.

         The texts prescribed are cortex in different socio  cultural and political events and movements.The multi dimensional knowledge of the subject contained in these texts has a great importance in today's society. The conceptions of the writers contain in the compositions of classical literatures , American and African literature help the learners to explore more and more new ideas and motivate them to undertake a comparative study.

         The Department has a small library of its own having about 250 books to meet the urgent needs of the teachers and the taughts. The Department has a literary society, an annual journal with ISSN and a wall magazine for providing facilities for creative and critical literary development of the students. ASA matter of normal practice, the Department encourages the teachers and the students in participating in seminas, conferencs and workshops.
