  • Department of Chemistry

The department of Chemistry was established in the year 1962.The department offers Honors and Generic courses in the subject. In the year 2016 the department has introduced PG course. There are seven sanctioned posts in the department. At present there are six full-time and four contractual faculty members in the department. One post is lying vacant. The departmental research laboratory is recognised by Gauhati University as center for carrying out research work for pursuing Ph.D. The department has already completed three Major and three Minor projects. At present one Major Project is undergoing at the department.

The vision of the department is to embed the basic knowledge of chemistry in the students mind and to develop affinity towards the subject and allied field. This knowledge of the subject will enable them to achieve the skill of Chemistry related field that helps them to choose their carriers and also  to justify the chemistry in everyday phenomena in the fields like drugs, cosmetics, environment etc. By keeping in mind the above mentioned visions, the objectives of the department are framed according to the following points.

  • To make them understand the basic ideas of Chemical thermodynamics and Kinetics, Electrochemistry, states of matter, statistical thermodynamics,  phase   and chemistry of surfaces and colloide
  • Knowledge of few aliphatic and aromatics organic compounds- their preparation, properties & reactions (hydrocarbon, alkyl halides, alcohol, carboxylic acid, amines, benzene phenols etc.), photochemistry- its physical importance and use in organic chemistry, natural products and the drug.
  • Understand the classical approach of atomic structure & theories of bonding, nature and properties of non-transition and transition elements, coordination compounds in terms of bonding, stability, reactions and electronic spectra, role of metal iron & other essential elements in biology.
  • Empowers students to know the basic of quantum chemistry and quantum approach of atomic structure and chemical bonding.
  • Understand the theories of molecular spectroscopy and ability touse the theories for studying common molecule.
  • Ability to analyze organic compounds and inorganic salt intense, estimate inorganic ions by volumetric, complexometric, graviometric, nedox and precipitation method, preparation of inorganic complex and organic compounds, determine various physical properties (like viscosity, surface tension, solubility, molecular mass, specific rotation etc).
  • Ability to undertake project work
